Packing Frugally

You don't have to be wealthy to give generously. There are many ways that you can stretch your dollars and reach more children with the Good News of Jesus Christ. Here are few things you can do to save on items for your OCC box.

Coupons
Coupons are an excellent way to save on items for your boxes but using them can take some amount of work. If you really want to maximize the affect of a coupon try to combine a coupon with a sale.

Free Items
There are many free items that you can include in your shoe boxes. For example, the free toy included in fast food kid's meals is a perfect item for OCC shoe boxes. This provides an excellent opportunity for your child to feel like they are personally contributing when they give up their toy to put in the box. Also, some dentist's offices will give you a goodie bag filled with things like tooth paste and toothbrushes when you go in for your checkup. These oral hygiene items are great for the boxes.

Ask for Donations
For the very brave, you can ask businesses for donations. Extra office supplies like paper and pens are great for the boxes. You can also ask dentist or orthodontist offices if they would be willing to donate toothpaste and toothbrushes.

Dollar Stores
Dollar stores are an excellent resource for items for an OCC shoebox. Many stores like Target also have Dollar Spots where you can find more great items.

Buy in Bulk
If you are packing multiple boxes consider buying items like pencils, socks, etc. in packs and then splitting them amongst your boxes. This can significantly reduce your cost per box.

Seasonal Sales
Shopping seasonal sales is another great way to get more bang for your buck. You can pick up candy for your boxes cheaply at the fall sales and by hitting back to school sales you can save a lot on school supplies. You also can pick up summer clearance items like flip-flops and t-shirts starting around August and don't forget to shop before and after Christmas sales for toys and other items.

Plan Ahead
Don't underestimate the power of planning ahead. The more time you give yourself to find items for your box the more you will be able to save.
